Introduction /
I came home late again today, but it’s not so bad. My wife decided to cook a lovely dinner. There’s just nothing like enjoying home-made delicious food. We had rib and corn soup, lovely shrimp, and some nice wine.
That sounds positively tasty. Does this happen often?
It happens once in a blue moon because most of the time we’re too busy to cook. In that case, we order takeaway food, or I drag myself to the nearest fast food restaurant and stuff myself with whatever I can find…
You work very hard indeed. But I can’t quite imagine you stopping by at McDonald’s for an evening meal.
Do you know that 68 million people eat in McDonald's restaurants every day? That's more than the entire population of the UK.
That is a ginormous number. Still, I feel like it should be higher than that, because lots of people love fast food. So does this mean that McDonald’s is more popular than KFC?
I think KFC and McDonald’s are both popular in Britain and China, which means that they never stop trying to safeguard their reputation and sales performance. Competition between these two is fierce.
That’s what yawl get for goin’a Burger King!!
Each has created its own brand image, and I’m always seeing their adverts on TV. Which reminds me, there’s a new show on recently. It’s called the Supersize Show. Let’s check it out.

The Supersize Show
Q1
第一题
Host: Introduce yourselves, please.
KFP: Howdy, everyone, my name is KFP, which some people believe means ‘Kentucky Fried-chicken Place’. Well, I do come from Kentucky, but the name actually means ‘Kid Fattening Park’. Cuz when yawl take your kids in, they gonna get mighty fat.
Hey! Save some for me, dang it!
M: Hi, people. I am McRonald’s. I am the world's largest distributor of toys. Kids love me and I love kids. But I love money more.
>>>
Q2
第二题
Host: have you done anything to deceive your customers?
KFP: The name KFP is designed to make people ignore the fact that they are eating fried chicken, since fried food is actually a health hazard.
KFP:KFP
M: I’m mostly innocent except my Caesar salad is more fattening than my burgers, and I tried to keep this secret to myself.
>>>
Q3
第三题
Host: Name something which makes you proud.
KFP: Instead of having sushi and ramen, Japanese go to KFP on Christmas and stuff their tummies with chicken nuggets and fries. Japanese love me.
M: The Queen of England owns a McRonald's near Buckingham Palace. The Queen loves me.
>>>
Q4
第四题
Host: Reveal something from your past, please.
KFP: Which part? The part when I was in Kentucky? The part when I had a chicken? Or the part where I fried it?
M: I used to sell pizza in the 70s.
>>>
Q5
第五题
Host: Uh-huh. Do you do any strange things?
KFP: Well, some people say things about our Nuggets. They come in four official shapes: bell, bone, boot, and ball.
M: Our drive-thru staff won't serve you if you come on horseback.
But in Sweden, we opened a ski-through McRonald's. Just try not to burn yourself with the coffee as you leave.
>>>
Q6
第六题
Host: Say something nice to each other.
KFP: You goddamn surfboardin’ Californian jackass!
M: You take that back! Your chicken stinks even more than you do!
KFP: Damn varmint! Hey kids, where’d I put my shotgun..?
Host: Alright guys, easy now, calm down…
Host:
M: Yeah, dude, you need to relax a bit. … Ha! Take THAT!
Fighting ensues
Host: Argh! There’s a Big McMac in my eye! Stop the camera! Stop the show!
Ain’t nobody can mess with Sergeant Sanderson! Yee-haw!

Well, that was a disaster. Did you know that McDonald’s was sued by two American girls in 2002? They insisted that they had become obese because McDonald’s offers harmful food and they couldn’t resist the temptation. But they ended up going out of the frying pan and into the fire: the case was dropped because the defendant insisted that the girls must be eating fatty food from somewhere else. Now the girls were not just overweight; they also had legal costs to deal with.
It’s a bit silly isn’t it? You can’t indulge in something and blame other people for it. Did anything happen after this case?
The incident caught the eye of famous documentary director and movie-maker Morgan Spurlock. He was so eager to make McDonald’s look guilty that he decided to put himself to the test by only eating McDonald’s for thirty consecutive days. He won an Oscar for this.
Here’s how Spurlock almost killed himself.
On the first day, things seemed okay.
On the second, he spent half an hour finishing a giant burger for breakfast, then puked.
On the third, his stomach started to feel uncomfortable.
On the fifth, he had a daily calorie intake of 5000 calories.
On the ninth, he became depressed.
On the eighteenth, he was warned by his doctor to stop the experiment because his liver had ‘become butter’.
On the 29th, he couldn't go up stairs.
By the 30th, here’s what he had:
11.2 kilos of extra weight.
A fatty liver.
An increase in cholesterol.
Depression and exhaustion.
And lastly, an increase in his percentage of body fat.
And on the 31st day, he was a true American. So, what do you know about KFC?
Except for being a really convenient restaurant, KFC is a place which serves multiple uses. Out of battery? Find a socket in KFC and get it charged. Got an hour to kill before your train departs? Go to KFC. Another sad fact is when people feel that they need to use the bathroom, they look for KFC. Aren’t there any serious reasons to visit KFC? I mean, can’t we focus on its menu?
You know, focusing on the menu is probably the least healthy option there is. I’ve heard that the toys you get in McDonald’s are more nutritious than the actual food. Back to KFC; what do you think of the menu?
I’ve heard some people say that there is nothing delicious in KFC. Thankfully for me, my 1-year-old nephew knows how to fry a chicken wing - simply throw it in the frying pan, and voila.
Still, there are lots of people out there who are crazy for it. Did you hear about what happened last year in the UK? Apparently, KFC had a problem with their supply of chicken, and they had to close a lot of stores. A lot of sad, sad people were outraged by this. It was even on the news. Here, have a listen.
Reporter:
A bizarre story of our times, after KFC runs out of chicken, the police are forced to
warn people to stop calling, it’s not an emergency.
Indignant woman:
I’ve had to go to Burger King!
Av ad t’go t’Burger King!
That poor woman. She had to go to Burger King. I can really feel her pain. It’s like asking for a BMW but being given a bicycle instead.

So what’s your opinion regarding fast food?
I go to KFC 3-4 times a month although I am aware of its unhealthiness. They’re just good at reaching me with their tempting adverts, which sometimes win over my less-disciplined mind. I understand that they are doing what businesses should prioritise doing - making profits. I can hardly smell their self-awareness when they mention putting their menus on a healthier track. Another dirty trick (in this case it is cunning and dirty) of these fast food businesses is that they embed their brand characters into the younger generation’s mind. They grow up being accompanied by these characters, so they are the very restaurants they go to because they know them well. But do they really?
I think Apple is doing a better job in fulfilling their social responsibilities by reminding iPhone users of the time they spend on the phone. If you know about your product’s downsides, at least remind people about them because the ball is in your court. Donations or other sorts of philanthropy mean nothing when you’re trying to hide the truth from your customers.
What’s your take on it?
I think that moderation is important. It’s like a lot of things in life. For example, it’s fine to drink alcohol every now and then. But if you drink lots of it every day, and it’s the only thing that you drink, then this is clearly no good. Other things like smoking are just unhealthy for you. All you’re doing is killing yourself for something which feels good for just a little while. So with fast food, have a think about what you’re putting into your body.
Love your stomach as much as this guy does. STOMACH.
Learn how to cook delicious food, and you’ll be much happier for it. Fast food might be cheap, but there’s always a cost. Instead of reaching for the French fries, try grabbing some exercise instead.
Fast food chains like to portray themselves as wonderful places where you can feel at home and enjoy a happy and carefree lifestyle. They never mention the excessive fat and sugar, the weight you might put on, the chemicals that go into your body, or the billions of animals that get killed.
