China mum sells off twin babies for 65,000 yuan, buys new phone

A young Chinese mother has sold her newborn twins for 65,000 yuan in order to pay off her credit card bills.



The tiny boys, not yet two weeks old, were sold to two strange families who live more than 700 kilometres (430 miles) away from their hometown in eastern China.


Their mother, in her 20s, also bought a new phone with the profit.


The mother and her partner have been arrested by police. The babies have been rescued and given to their grandparents to be looked after.


The shocking case was revealed by police in Cixi in Zhejiang Province on Friday.


According to the police, the woman is known by her surname Ma. The babies were said to be premature and had to be put into incubators immediately.


Her partner, known by his surname Wu, failed to show up in the hospital and his parents refused to help Ma out.


As a result, Ma viewed her children as burden and decided to sell them to strangers.


She sold one boy for 45,000 yuan and the other for 20,000 yuan.


The mother used the money to pay off her credit card bills and buy a new mobile phone.






Police said her partner Wu then appeared and demanded her use the profit to pay off his gambling debts, but Ma told him the money had been spent.


Cixi police received leads of the case in July and formed two separate teams to chase each of the boys.


One of them headed to Anhui Province and the other went to Shandong Province.


Both babies were found and the adoptive families agreed to hand the children to the police after officers explained them the seriousness of the matter.


The boys have been given to Ma's parents to be looked after.


Ma and Wu have been arrested by police.


People who are found guilty of child trafficking can be jailed for up to 10 years in China.


Families who buy trafficked children are also subject to legal punishment.
